Yoga

The Sanskrit word 'yoga' can be translated in contemporary practice to mean 'union' - yoga is a holistic physical, mental and spiritual practice or discipline, that aims to unite and transform body and mind.

Yoga Style

Picture
There are many types of yoga to practice, so it's important to discover the right one for you.  I teach vinyasa flow yoga, which is a dynamic practice based on Hatha yoga.  You will be guided through a series of postures, coordinating movement with the breath to unite mind, body and soul.

This style of yoga can be physically challenging, but is also energising and relaxing, and has something to offer everyone!
Classes are mixed level and whether you are a beginner or experienced student, you are encouraged to work at your own pace and ability.  Modifications to postures are given so that you can take options that feel good to you and your body.

Each class will start with pranayama (breathing techniques), to calm the mind and body in preparation for practice.  We then flow through physical asanas (postures), and we end the class with savasana (relaxation), to allow our bodies to feel the benefits of our practice.

Classes will vary week to week - sometimes slow and strong, or sometimes faster paced..... but always fun!

Why is Yoga so awesome?

The benefits of yoga, for both your body and mind, are endless.... and everyone experiences something different from their personal practice.  Here are just a few of the amazing benefits of a regular yoga practice:

  • Improve strength, tone and flexibility
  • Improve posture and balance
  • Release tension, lower stress and anxiety
  • Improve concentration, attention and memory
  • Increase energy levels
  • Promote better sleep

Together we can find what feels good for you, strengthening both mind and body, and finding inner peace.

Coming to Class - FAQ

What should I wear? Comfortable, lightweight clothes which allow you to move are best.  A top which doesn't rise up or can be tucked in is ideal. Bring along a warm layer for the start and end of practice.  For your safety your mat is a no sock zone! Special yoga socks which have grip soles are available to buy from various retailers if you prefer to wear them.

How should I prepare? Make sure you are well hydrated, and refrain from eating for around 2 hours prior to class.

What should I bring? I have a limited number of mats available so do bring your own yoga mat if you have one.

I'm a complete beginner, is that ok? Absolutely!

Do I need to be flexible? Not at all! Practicing yoga regularly can help you gain flexibility!

Do I have to book a space? Some classes are drop-in and some require booking - see my Class Timetable for information.

Class Etiquette

I'm so pleased you will be coming to class! To make this yoga practice an enjoyable experience for you and everyone else, please be sure to follow our simple class etiquette:

  • Arrive 5-10 minutes early to roll out your mat and settle in. If you arrive after the start time, try again the next week.
  • Place all belongings to the side of the room so you can focus on your practice, safely and with no distractions.
  • Switch off your mobile phone, and remove your watch. You cannot be present when you watch the clock!
  • Stay for the whole class!
  • Come to class with an open mind, a positive attitude.... and a smile!

See you on the mat!

"I didn't quite know what to expect from yoga, I now attend Kate's yoga class at least once a week and find it highly enjoyable, it's not only physically fulfilling but also spiritually so. I am so glad I started yoga, it's increased my flexibility and has eased my lower back and hip pain. It's a lovely friendly class, I always feel so welcome."
